Colors and a transparent background

Choose a pattern color and a background color with the color picker or a HEX code, such as #1A4D8F. Tick Transparent background to download a PNG or SVG with no background at all, so the code sits directly on your packaging, poster or slide. JPG files always get a white background, because JPG has no transparency.

A dark pattern on a light background scans best. The editor warns you when the contrast between the two colors is low, and when the pattern is lighter than the background, which some phone cameras struggle with.

Dots, rounded corners and other pattern styles

The pattern is the small squares that make up the code. Choose square, dots, rounded, soft or diamond modules.

The three large squares in the corners help phones find the code. Under Corner frames style, choose square, rounded or circle corners. The pattern style does not change these corner squares, so they always stay solid and easy to find.

Frames and shapes

A frame adds a call to action around the code, such as "Scan for the menu" or "Scan to pay". There are 19 frame styles: Simple, Outline, Label, Double, Solid, Tab, Badge, Rounded, Ticket, Signature, Pointer, Shopping bag, Gift, Ribbon, Envelope, Delivery, Hand, Coffee cup and Clipboard. You can also choose No frame. The frame text can be up to 35 characters, and you pick the frame color and text color.

A shape puts the code inside a circle, a heart, a badge or a rounded square. The code itself stays square with its quiet margin, and decorative dots fill the rest of the shape. Choose an outline color to finish the edge. A shape replaces the frame, so you use one or the other.

Your logo in the middle

Upload your logo as a PNG, JPG or WebP file of up to 5 MB. It is placed in the center of the code on a small white square, at a fixed size of about one sixth of the code's width. Designed codes use the highest error correction level, so the code still scans with the logo on top. A square icon usually reads better than a wide wordmark.

Design tips that keep a custom QR code scannable

Keep strong contrast: dark on light, never light on dark. Leave a clear margin around the code and do not let text or images touch it. Print it at least 2 cm (0.8 in) wide, more for posters seen from a distance, and leave out the logo and decorative patterns on very small labels.

With a transparent background, the editor cannot know the color the code will sit on, so check it on the real surface. When you download, we read the design back at several sizes. If it does not return your exact link, the download is blocked and you see what to try: more contrast, a simpler pattern or a different logo. Still scan the printed code with an iPhone and an Android phone before a large print run.

Questions

Is designing a custom QR code free?+

Yes. Colors, patterns, corners, frames, shapes, your logo and downloads in PNG, SVG and JPG are free with an account.

Can I make a QR code with a transparent background?+

Yes. Tick Transparent background and download a PNG or SVG. JPG files always have a white background.

Can I make a QR code with rounded corners or dots?+

Yes. Choose the dots or rounded pattern for the small squares, and rounded or circle corners for the three large squares.

Can I change the design after printing?+

The printed image stays as it is. You can change the design in your dashboard and download it again for your next print. The code opens the same short link, so old and new prints both keep working.

Which colors scan best?+

A dark pattern on a light background, with strong contrast between them. The editor warns you when the contrast is low or the pattern is lighter than the background.
